Latin spotlight:
When I started this I said I would be the most unbiased as I could. I have learned the importance of that in my journalism program. But since this week there is no big Latin event to bring here and it is February 14th, I have to show my favourite singer on her birthday. So FYI, this is a biased opinion and you will see my personal thoughts in this paragraph.
Karol G, the Latina who has shown the world the power that Latin America has, and more importantly Colombia. Most of you might know about reggaeton, and as popular it is right now all over the world, it wasn’t like that. The genre started in Puerto Rico with some influences in Panama. It was a sexist genre not only in their lyrics but also in the industry. In the late 90’s and early 2000’s it was a male-dominated music. Ivy Queen was the first woman to rap and sing in the urban Latin genres. She showed the world that women can also enjoy their sexuality freely as they want. They can be hot and sexy at the same time they are powerful and successful. All of this was happening when reggaeton was the music in the Latin ghettos, it was for a young generation related to crime and obscenity. With time it started to travel the world and break stereotypes. And It got to Colombia, the second house for this genre. In the 2000s a star was being formed, Carolina Giraldo Navarro AKA Karol G. She was part of Reykon’s crew as a backup singer. Then she moved on and started her single career. Since the beginning, she has shown her empowerment. It wasn’t easy but her career shows hard work and resilience. Now she is one of the most known Latin women singers around the world. From singing in schools and small events in Medellin, Colombia to being in the biggest stages all over the world. I could write about her pages and pages, but I’m sure you are not here for that. For a lot of people, she might be another reggaeton singer, but for most of us, she represents hard work, the empowerment of women in the music industry and the representation of all the Latinas around the world.
